A poem and a painting to plant you amongst nature

30 May 2022 | Written by By The Joy Club

Today, we are delighted to share the winning creative entries for our ‘In My Garden’ challenge on the Club forum. Our winners were members Chris Jackson and Sandra Falconer. The challenge invited members to submit artwork inspired by their own garden into our ‘Arts & Entertainment’ forum. We hope you enjoy their creative projects as much as we did!

‘SLUGS’ – a poem by Sandra Falconer

The circumstances which inspired this poem would make a short story in itself.  I will spare you the gruesome details. Suffice it to say that after weeks of growing vegetables, apparently to feed a hungry mollusc population, I spotted the tell tale silvery trails on my living room carpet after I had walked barefoot to the kitchen in the middle of the night. The poem just had to be written!

‘Tried extremely hard! Achieved something!’

Our next winner is Chris Jackson, who shared a painting she created during a watercolour class at The Joy Club. Here’s what she had to say about it’s composition:

‘I have been really enjoying the watercolour and drawing sessions available with The Joy Club and look forward to joining this group every fortnight. For the last session we were drawing and painting birch trees. This picture was completed within the hour session although I had prepared my paper with masking fluid to ensure I had enough time to complete the birch trees correctly. I am not sure who was more surprised by this result – myself or the others who were there!

With no experience of anything artistic or with as much experience as someone can have the group is welcoming and always a friendly place to enjoy an hour together learning and challenging yourself to engage with others and learn new skills.  Hopefully you will soon come and give it a go too.’

It was completed using:

  • Masking fluid
  • Inktense pencils
  • Various fine liners
  • Rapid mark making (and determination).
