Women at sea: Tales of courage and defiance with Lizi Bennett

29 Aug 2024 | Written by Lizi Bennett

Join theatre maker and performer Lizi Bennett, director of Stowaway Theatre Company, as she delves into the captivating world of women and their complex relationship with the sea. In this episode, part of her ongoing research for an upcoming show, Lizi unearths the true stories of extraordinary women who navigated the perilous waters of history – literally and figuratively.

Discover the tales of Anne Parker, Mary Read and Mary Patten, women who defied societal norms and maritime superstitions to carve out their places at sea. From dutiful wives supporting their sailor husbands to daring adventurers who disguised themselves as men, these women took on roles that tested their courage and resilience. When fate threw them into dire situations, they were forced to take the helm, saving not just themselves but others in the process.

Drawing inspiration from David Cordingly’s “Seafaring Women” and the historic accounts in Captain Charles Johnston’s “A General History of the Pyrates,” Lizi explores how these women’s stories challenge the male-dominated narratives of the time. This episode shines a light on the unsung heroines who braved the treacherous seas, often in secret, to leave their mark on history.
