The winner – a poem by Elsa Browne

The Joy Club member Elsa Browne shares a playful and relatable poem, “The winner”. Settle in for a lighthearted and charming read.

Your folks have gone out
and it’s just you and me
Sitting here cosily
watching TV.

You’re all smiles and we huddle.
Then you’re back on your feet
Come, give me a cuddle
(I need you to sleep).

So with a last squeeze
I carry you off to your cot
(as I silently whisper, ‘Thank God’).

But – the bars raise your ire. (It’s a trap!)

And now, it’s a bout.

You wriggle and squirm
and get ready to shout.
Your tiny fists are balled up
as you toss the soft toys.
The seconds are out!

Your opponent is tired
but her arms are steel wired.
And she knows that to win
she must wrestle you in
to the bag with a zip.

With one last trick up her sleeve
she grabs for the screen
that brings up the song
that will send you to sleep
before very long.

You whimper and simper
and suck at your thumb.
You make a last-ditch attempt
as the lights are now low –
and succumb. There you go.

And Granny is spent!
