Welcome to the first instalment of a new audio series, featuring ‘A certain kind of truth,’ a captivating novel by The Joy Club member Kathy Feest.
This episode begins with chapter one, introducing the gripping and moving story of two women, Anna and Stephanie, who are a generation apart but share similar fates of abandonment by their families.
Born in 1921 and 1951 respectively, Anna and Stephanie come from Catholic families in small American towns. Each is thrown out of their family home for different reasons, but both find solace and a new beginning through music in New York City during the 1970s. As their paths intertwine, they slowly uncover more about their pasts and come to realise that truth is not as certain as it first appears. Through self-belief, old wounds begin to heal.
Kathy’s inspiration for writing this novel stems from a personal family revelation. In her late forties, Kathy discovered through an aged great-aunt that she had another great-aunt who had become pregnant and was evicted from the family. With no further information available, Kathy’s imagination and experiences in New York supplied the rest of the story.
Join us as we embark on this emotional journey of discovery, resilience and the healing power of music.
